It's more likely than you think.

This is my journal, so I can give my opinion.  *laughs*

Okay, so I'm sure by now everyone has noticed the "Needs Premium Membership" nonsense on the user pages.
I would like to post a link to a very well written news article about this.

I'm fairly disgusted.  It's not even about the tactless phrasing anymore.  It's about this being insult to injury in dA's money grubbing tactics.  There is a growing and disturbing trend about this site being less about art and appreciation and more about squeezing as much as possible from the masses.

Don't even get me started on the prints system.....

I've always felt very fortunate here with the people I have encountered and the art I have seen.  It's not hard for me to find something that is so amazing that my jaw drops on a DAILY basis.  I love wandering around just to see what I can find.  The people I have met here constantly suprise me with how kind, helpful, and talented they are.
The things I love most about Deviant Art have nothing to do with the administration.  Of everything here that I find inspiring, the administration has NEVER been one of them.  That is so sad.  Generally a community follows the example of it's leaders.  I'm so glad that the opposite is true here.

I give money on a regular basis to several sites.  It's not a big deal to me to give to a place I frequent that treats me as someone they value (regardless of whatever my status may be there).  I don't want to give money to a site that only sees me as a wallet.

Well spoke, and I totally agree. I certainly don't "need" a premium subscription, and even if I wanted one, I have no desire to give money to a site that constantly nags un-subscribers, and consistantly has ads that crash my browser. I swear they do that just because they want you to upgrade your account. (And perhaps the browser-crashing thing is just me, but I have yet to have another site do it)

When I first joined I believe it was in 2003 or later dont remember, I can recall what DA was all about so early ago. I have seen it grow with lots new things added on over the years but never did it ask me to put out my cash. I hated that most recently I kept getting these notices that I have had over 100 Deviations and that I should think of getting a subscription. I cant find work right now so where do they think I can pay. I am happy and content with what I have. It is true that since its growth the only thing they see is a way to supposedly keep it alive. I for one am content with what I have. I havent found a use to even having one anyway. I am no dollar sign I am an artistic deviant darn it...hehe.

Hm never thought I my comment got noticed hehe. But yeah it bothered me so much that when I would log in to get that notice of like saying hey man its time to get a subscription. I almost at one point feared them taking this account of mine away if I did not comply...glad I came to my senses lol.

*glomps* Awww, sorry hon! I didn't mean to make you feel that I didn't notice. I've just been flakey on replies.
Yeah, I know the feeling. I felt that way too. It was like, "what the? is this becoming a pay site?"

Yeah I noticed that phrasing about a day after it was changed and thought that it was... a bit off at least. But you're right, DA's administration has been pushing bit by bit for more money from the community. I can understand that it takes money to operate a website but with as many people come here on a daily basis, I dare say advertising should cover it. And if that doesn't, there's always the suscriptions. I personally have never had a subscription, nor found a use for it now that they fixed the twitch with the journal page everytime an ad would refresh. Even then, it didn't bother me enough to get a sub.

Ultimately the worth of any community is its members and hopefully we, as members, can continue to keep the original vision of DA: art, artists, and the sharing of knowledge on the subject!

I wouldn't mind getting a sub if I felt the people running the site were interested in more than making a profit. They just have never seemed really that involved to me.
Yes! That's it exactly. That's why I stay.

Why must they ask us for money when we get quite enough for free?
